ParticipantNice Magicker, really nice…
But what is theis HDR they are complaining about in the shot of the cottage by a lake? Is that a special camera, or a technique for manipulating the shot after the event? Just wondered, I thought it looked cool… 😀
(and yeah I know it’s High Dynamic Range, but still not sure what it is exactly :))
P.S Ullswater..the scene of many a school summer camp…nice place, thought I recognised the barn..lol

ParticipantSome great pics there Magicker.
I’ve got pretty much the exact same photo of Symonds Yat myself. Your colours are way more vibrant than on my orignal – natural light, filters, or photoshop?

Participantnormally a camera can only record a limited amount of information which results in the common side effect of blown out hight lights or shadows that are 2 deep. the camera can only expose a certain range
so some clever git came up with the idea of HDR
HDR images are simply multiple LDR images (ie a photograph) taken at different exposures (i normally only take 3 exposures at +- 2 stops from normal exposure but some poeple swear by 7) you then use either photoshop or photomatrix or similar to create your HDR file (32 bits of info).
the method you then use to step down the image (back to 8 bits) is the bit where you combine the massive range you now have and decide what can be shoe-horned into the 8 bits you have to play with
the results can be amazing – however some people really realy dont like these effects and hence the complaining
here are some of my fav HDR images (not taken by my …. mores the pity)

Participantpics look awesome, what camera would i need to do that with ? I’m currently using a sony 3.2mp but am looking to buy a new camera shortly as the old one is too big and too low res now.

ParticipantThanks Magicker! Now I get it..Ok They’re not all to my taste, especially the ones looking like video game images…but the “natural” shots are awesome, especially the effect it has on sky etc..how do you keep camera still though whilts you change all your settings?
Yes I am a camera noob 😀

Participantwet – any camera capable of altering the shutter time will do the trick – though ofcouse a digital SLR cam will make life a lot easier
a tripod is essential

ParticipantI invested in a Canon EOS 350D not long ago and have a long way to go before mastering it but noticed one pretty striking thing with regards to having more mega pixels to play with. Theres a significant reduction in noise (in particular on darker shots) and the colours are a lot richer from the benefit in that
