    Attention soldiers,

We would like to explain here how committed we are to increasing everyone’s experience with Battlefield, especially regarding the updates for Battlefield 2142. We acknowledge that the patching process could have been smoother for Battlefield 2; we have listened to the feedback and learnt from it.

To accomplish this goal Dice has recently formed a Live Team with the purpose of making sure your playing experience on the Battlefield is as solid as possible after the game is launched. Among other things, the team works closely with the community and handles the patching process, together with the Ranked Server Providers.

Your Dice Live Team is located at the Dice Studio in Stockholm and is made up of key people from the game project teams. This means that the same people who actually built Battlefield 2142 will be responsible for updating it. It has the clear advantage of involving people who are fully knowledgeable about the code and design of the game. The patches will also be thoroughly tested in closed beta tests before being released.

The patches will also be entirely dedicated to correcting bugs and making fixes instead of introducing new gameplay mechanics, thus significantly reducing the risk of introducing new bugs with the patches.

With all this said, we would like to announce patch 1.05 for Battlefield 2142. The patch includes more than 25 fixes which will improve every player’s experience on the Battlefield.

The following fixes will be included, along with many others:

    * Titan will no longer be able to move once its shields are down, so that lag within the titan should be significantly reduced and revive inside the titan shouldn’t be a problem any more
    * Changes in EA master server communication to greatly reduce disconnects
    * Players are now able to receive the Titan Survival Pin
    * All players will see the same missile silo location numbers in Titan Mode

Patch 1.05 is scheduled for release later in November so keep watching this space for detailed release information. Also, stay tuned for more information on an upcoming competition allowing you to make your mark in 2142.

    See you on the Battlefield!

    Thanks Lammie.

But the following paragraph made me smile:

The patches will also be thoroughly tested in closed beta tests before being released.

Will this be as “thorough” as the 1.0 release? 😛

Sounds good. And I like the idea of a fixed titan once the shields are shot.

    Looks promising.

hmmm….. so the same sloppy coders who built a game full of bugs and problems will be responsible for the patches. Great.

For the benefit of everyone here, I’ve translated it so it’s jargon free.

    Hello again chumps!

We would like to explain here how committed we are to making as much money as possible, those whores and that booze doesn’t pay for themselves you know! We acknowledge that the patching process could have been smoother for Battlefield 2, someone pointed that out in the brothel the other day. Can’t remember who said it though because I was getting a blowie off a very expensive hooker at the time and since you’ve all sent us your money I thought the least I could do was concentrate on enjoying it for you.

Anyway, Dice has recently formed a Live Team with the purpose of getting as much out of this cash cow as we can while the goings good, though given EA’s success rate with releasing a half finished mod every 6 months and calling it a new game we expect a good few years out of this yet.

Your Dice Live Team is located at the Dice Studio in Stockholm which is good for us because all those stories you hear about tidy blonde Swedish birds with wazzo jugs is true and not to put too fine a point on it we’re laughing our cocks off about this, these birds will do anything, and I mean anything once you’ve got a Porsche.

Where did we get this money from? Oh yeah, that game we released. Sorry, forgot myself there. Someone said we should try to make it work! I think it was Sven – god that lads a joker! We all had a laugh about that one I can tell you! We got him another bottle of champers to keep him quiet just so we didn’t split our sides laughing!

With all this said, we would like to announce a patch Battlefield 2142, that is when we’ve got out of the pub and our todgers have fallen off. You’ll appreciate that we’re having far too much fun with your brass to bother at the moment. The patch includes more than 25 fixes which will improve every player’s experience on the Battlefield, but will probably cause about 50 more problems to fuck it up because it’s hard to concentrate with a all this cash lying around waiting to be spent.

In the meantime, keep playing our game because we certainly fucking aren’t!

See you on the Battlefield! (my arse!)

Sorry Lammie – everyone knows its not your fault, and many thanks for passing the info on.

Just for everyones intererest, it is actually very rare that a game’s maintainance team is the same as the developers. There’s a number of reasons. Firstly, developers don’t like to think of themselves as support guys. Secondly, when a title is finished a team normally breaks up or moves on.

This is not just true of the gaming world – software in general is very like this. It’s just that game titles often exagerate the effects because a team breaks up or moves on after a release. Software that is a distinct phased release product, however, normally has a fairly static team and so fixes (if done by a suport group) can get more easily rolled back into the next release of the product proper. Since each of the BF series is effectively a separate product, this feedback process is normally missing. I.e. a bug in BF1942 will probably not be relevent to the BFV codebase.

I worked for EA up until quite recently, and was in the position where I had a lot of contact with all the various studios around the world. Almost without fail, games teams did not have a “support section” – pretty much an alien concept to them. So any post-release work (if any) was done by a separate group.

However, I should qualify this by saying that most of my contact was with the teams doing console games, and so I did not get to spend much time with a large PC-based title. And, of course, DICE up until a month or two ago were a separate company anyway.

The company I worked for was acquired by EA a few years ago in part due to its excellent support systems, people, and philosophy. However, within a year this side of our business had been almost completely shut down by EA. That should tell you something about EA’s attitude to things…..

I may be wrong in this next bit, but I believe EA Warrington were involved in BF support, even though the game was mostly developed in Sweden. The news from DICE that they are putting a dedicated support team together in Sweden may be related to the fact that EA very recently annouced the closure of the Warrington office……

EA Warrington did the console version but had nothing to do with any of the pc titles. all the expansion packs/patches for BF2 were done by DICE Canada, which as we know has been shut down by EA
