I have got to write an essay on “landscapes through time”… specifically on Brutalist architecture *
One of my case studies is on the gateshead multistory carpark… I am trying to gauge whether people think it is of historical architectural (and cultural – it features in the film get carter) importance… or whether you think that all 60’s buildings of the type should be knocked down (Re: Kevin Mclouds Demolition)…
Gateshead Carpark (Aka Get Carter Car Park)
I am also looking for other famous examples – so far im using Goldfingers Trellic tower (actually one of my favorite buildings in London), and the Parkhill Estate… can anyone think of any other famous examples.
Trellic Tower

They look like monstrous carbuncles to me 🙄 🙄
May 15, 2006 at 10:06 am #24047XDC wild egg tamerParticipantTrellick tower is a fine example, another for me would be the South Bank centre or the building in the middle of the roundabout over Westminister Bridge though that is finally getting some kind of makeover.
I’l think of more examples today while i’m at work and if you need a pic of any of the London buildings, let me know and i’l grab a pic for you.
May 15, 2006 at 11:23 am #24048RonathonParticipantTricorn Centre in Portsmouth is a prime example of those concrete monstrosities.
Fortunately they demolished the place last year (with considerable effort), shame they didn’t do the rest of pompey with it though 😆

LOL Quality someone even made it out lego:

There’s also a huge block of flats in Southampton that was given grade listed status, purely for extra funding from central government to maintain it. Can’t remember the name of the place, but it was designed to look like the bulkhead of a ship in all its concrete glory 😯
May 15, 2006 at 11:24 am #24049XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantI likes ’em!
Reminds me of what the future was supposed to be like when I was a lad. For the most part they’re concrete eyesores, but at least they have character and a strange foreboding quality.
This is the Council Offices near where I live in a town called Aylesbury. It’s the tallest building for miles.
May 15, 2006 at 12:22 pm #24050von smallhousenParticipantyeah they are the idealic dream of some science fiction future, but, they are quite often standing alone, and there they become eyesore. If the buildings surrounded them all reflected the same style they would appear more aesthetically pleasing, but on the whole they just look dreary and over time they sponge up exhaust fumes and dust and have a funny black dirt layer to them.
now gingerbread houses, thats what I’m talking about louis!
May 15, 2006 at 12:34 pm #24051VicJamesonParticipantThe Pasmore Pavillion in Peterlee is a great example of a wonderful structure that was totally wasted on the locals.

It’s always being threatened with demolition, but is worth a look even though they’ve removed the stairs and let it get dirty and overgrown now.
Edit: Also, the Dunston Rocket at Gateshead is worth a look, but the area is rough as fuck and I wouldn’t go there alone.

Seriously, what a waste of space that looks. No doubt commissioned at the expense of some local council to the cost of local rate/council taxpayers. 😡
http://www.knowhere.co.uk/3895_goodbad.html <-- Local comments on Peterlee including the pavillion, not really relevant but made me laugh :)
Think Von sums it up well, these places probably looked great just after they’d been built, just like on the architects drawings etc. Then give them 20 years + of fine English polution and neglect from local authorities and they just look an eyesore, ready to be blow up by some kid on Jim’ll Fix It.

was talking about that building the gurkin the other day – I thought it looked more like a penis than a gurkin… but in hindsite, i think its just an enormous butt plug!
May 15, 2006 at 1:23 pm #24056XDCNeonSamuraiParticipantThe Pasmore Pavillion was built as an experiment. The idea being that giving people a place to congregate and live in harmony would promote peace and love etc. All that ends up happening though is that the local kids who’ve been kicked out by their parents hang around and end up causing trouble.
Same with tower blocks and housing estates. They look great on paper and then for the first few years, but as they don’t belong to any of the tenents, what do they care about the state they’re in?
It seems that most architects seem to have a very high opinion of the human race, but they’re wrong.

How do you know what a butt plug looks like?
