I have a super fast 1Ghz PC in the other room, seriously it’s the fastest PC you will ever find in it’s class, but I can’t let you try it untill you buy it!! Cough up!! Oh and welcome back 😛
November 27, 2006 at 12:39 pm #40261XDCMADMAXParticipantHow long are you back in the UK for and get your arse on TS and install BF 2142 mate.
It will be like old times
November 28, 2006 at 6:55 pm #40262xdc the docParticipantWoot! Back in Edinburgh… and it aint raining! What a welcome!
I am back in the UK for a year at least – so will be back online soon dudes.
Now come on… all you tech heads…. I seriously need some help here.
If you were to buy/build a gaming PC in the next month what would be good stuff for it? I dont want top of the range… just a good balance between cost and performance/ but at the upper endo of the market I guess.
Also… where is the best place to buy this aforementioned stuff?
Suggestions please?? 😀
November 28, 2006 at 7:10 pm #40263AnonymousParticipantIntel Core 2 Duo E6600 LGA775 Conroe 2.4Ghz (1066FSB) £220
Abit AW9D Intel 975X PCI-X DDR2 Motherboard £132
RAM is a bit of a bleh as I don’t like a lot of their current timings/latency…
Western Digital Raptor X 150gb 10k RPM SATA Drives (x2 or 3) £166 each
Creative X-Fi
GeForce 8800 GTS (bit cheaper than GTX but not that much worse) £340
Oh and a dedicated hardware RAID controller, which I have for sale as a matter of fact 😛
Lian Li case/Enermax PSU/Lite On DVD-RW FTW!November 29, 2006 at 2:39 pm #40264xdc the docParticipantSo where is a good place to buy this stuff? And is Raid really necessary? It sounds like a bit of a hassle TBH 🙂

Overclockers and no, its not. Unless you’re prepared to spend $$$ just to have a map load a couple of seconds quicker than normal.
But i am sure you will find some who think otherwise…
November 29, 2006 at 3:51 pm #40266XDCsPUNKerParticipantWelcome home doctor 😉
http://www.overclockers.co.uk are probably your best bet if youwant to build your own.
depending on how future minded you are LeGit has a point about the new nvidia graphics cards. Expensive as they may seem, its because the 8800s are the only cards that can currently handle directx10 which (i think) will only be available for vista but is supposed to speed things up considerably and also make the graphics even smoother. But Ill let you read up about that stuff.
Things to consider:
a dual core proccessor either AMD or intel the prices are getting reasonable. Although amd is normally always cheaper.also make sure thit´s 64 bit
a motherboard that is SLI or crossfire compatible In case you fancy running another graphics card in the same machine in the future. I use an ASUS motherboard and am pretty happy with it. With regards to graphics cards (or at least nvidia) I´d recommend a geforce 7800 or higher although as mentioned at the start you may want to invest in one of the new beasts. As for other odds n sods. SATA hard drives are pretty fast. Sound cards built into motherboards are pretty good nowadays but you cant beat a good creative x-fi card if you want the bees knees. You dont need to spend loads just get the basic. With regards to price. I have no idea what the UK market is like at the moment or even if its almost as cheap to get a ready made. hope that helps ,)November 29, 2006 at 4:19 pm #40267xdc the docParticipantAhhhh – thats useful guys thamx. I think SLI as a concept is a pile of bollox so I will steer clear of that at the mo – but having a GFX card that is dx10 compatible would be worth paying extra for I think.
Am I right in thinking that Turks bought a ready built system somewhere recently that was pretty much as cheap as a home built would be? Cant remember the name of the company.
Im looking forward to catching up with you guys on TS.
What games do I need? Peeps still into the latest battlefield or are the winds of change a blowing?
November 29, 2006 at 4:29 pm #40268WipersParticipantWell we have a Battlefield 2142 server and a Red Orchestra server so take your pick.
2142 is a lot better than many of us thought it was going to be – you just have to get used to the CTDs and disconnects. 🙄
November 29, 2006 at 4:55 pm #40269XDC wild egg tamerParticipanthttp://www.meshplc.co.uk normally do reasonable pcs at a reasonable price…….i believe thats the make of turks pc.
November 29, 2006 at 5:08 pm #40270DeicistParticipantAlthough the new 8800 is a beast of a card, it’s worth considering that it’ll be a while before DX10 games are the norm….and by the time that happens the next generation of cards will be out and cards with the performance of the 8800 will be half the price. You have to weigh up whether you want to splash out a fortune on a card now, or get a cheaper (but still powerful) Nvidia 7900 or Ati X1900 which will play anything you want to for a good 6 – 12 months, then upgrade to a DX10 card when DX10 games are making an impact.
As for a processor at the moment AMD has nothing that can touch the conroe (core 2 duo). Even the low end conroes can beat an AMD FX with a bit of overclocking, and the midrange ones are beasts. The top end ‘extreme edition’ is just silly money for not much more performance.
November 29, 2006 at 9:22 pm #40271TurksMeisterParticipantI bought a Mesh PC from Zza1pqx of the Hussars fame for £450… fx 53, 9800 pro etc… and its doing its job nicely. Thinking of adding an extra gig of RAM at some point, as I am doing alot of film/photo editing atm. Just bought another 320 gb too which was nice – now have 800gb (Dont care how much you have spunky monkey!)
And about to splash out on a burglar catching webcam, just need to get my bum in gear 🙂
btw if you want a good monitor… I am loving my Samsung SyncMaster 930bf … as you can see… it was made for the BF series!
November 30, 2006 at 6:21 am #40272xdc the docParticipantOk – how about this then? Bargain? Or not?
Im taking on board what peeps are saying – but MESH dont seem to be very flexible on letting you change components around – so the intel duo chips seem to be hard to get with the other specs I want.
I like the look of this 22″monitor with the 5ms response time!
Am I right in thinking that I can change this GFX card a year down the line for a dx10 compatible one? The motherboard will definately take it?
